Prof. Reuf Karabeg

Specialist in General Surgery and Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery



  • Born in Bugojno in 1959; Bosnia and Herzegovina/B&H
  • In February 1984 completed the Medical School in Tuzla , B&H
  • In April 1989  acquired the specialisation in General Surgery, and after completed registrar training in Banja Luka, Zagreb  and Sarajevo, completed the specialisation ahead of schedule in February 1993 in Sarajevo
  • 1990 enrolled in the post-graduate program in Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical School in Sarajevo and completed the studies in 1993 with the grade point average of  9,9 /out of  max 10.
  • In December 1996  completed the specialisation in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Sarajevo (6 months of the specialisation was  done in the Netherlands)
  • For exceptional professional results, particularly in the field of microsurgery and replantation in 1996 awarded the title of primarius (head doctor) by the Ministry of Health of Federation of BiH, becoming the youngest primarius in BiH, at the age of  37
  • In 2000 appointed the Head of Hand Surgery Division at the Clinic of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Clinical Centre in Sarajevo
  • In 2000  elected  as the first President of Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Maxillofacial Surgeons in BiH.  The Chair of Congress and the Congress Board of the 1st Congress of Plastic, Reconstructive and Maxillofacial Surgeons in BiH with international participation held in September 2003.  In charge as a  President until 2006
  • In September 2001 obtained Master's degree  at the Medical School in Sarajevo. Thesis: EVALUATION OF RESULTS OF THE FOREARM TENDON TRANSFERS IN IRREPARABLE INJURIES TO THE RADIAL NERVE CAUSED BY PROJECTILES DURING THE WAR
  • 2004 awarded the ARTHRO AG Certificate for his work on transplantation of the fourth generation of cultured cartilage, following the several training courses in Germany and Austria;  Bosnia and Herzegovina thereby became the sixth country in the world and the first country outside the European Union, in the same project where the transplantation of the fourth generation of cartilage was done in Sarajevo in 2006 (Head of Surgical Team)
  • In 2005   became  a member of ISAPS
  • In 2005 became the National Secretary of BiH (the representative of BiH) to ISAPS and performed functions of the office until 2016
  • September 2008- defended his doctoral dissertation at the Sarajevo University Medical School. Dissertation in:  SIGNIFICANCE OF  OWN EVALUATION FUNCTIONAL SCHEME IN ASSESSMENT OF RESULTS OF THE FOREARM TENDON TRANSFERS IN IRREPARABLE INJURIES TO THE RADIAL NERVE
  • January 2009 –  appointed  as the Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic of the Clinical Centre of Sarajevo University
  • June 2009 –  elected  as the President of Balkans Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons for the term 2009 – 2011
  • June 2009 – elected as  the Chairman of Organising Committee of the 7th Balkans Congress of Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons held in September 2011 in Sarajevo
  • December 2009 – On 5 December 2009 . promoted to the academic title of Assistant Professor at the Medical School in Sarajevo, the teaching subject of SURGERY, in the field of PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY, as well as the RESPONSIBLE TEACHER in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery in the subject of SURGERY at the Medical School and the School of Dental Medicine of the Clinical Centre of Sarajevo University
  • In September 2011, the Chairman of the Congress and Organising Committee of the 7th Balkans Congress of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons held in Sarajevo, with participation of 220 plastic and reconstructive surgeons from six continents.
  • May 2013, elected  as the first President of Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in BiH, holding this office to date.
  • September 2013 the Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in BiH, in the capacity of its President, was a co-organiser  of the 1st Fellows of Science Congress, held in Ljubljana, and Assistant Professor dr Karabeg actively contributed to it through organisation and lectures held
  • September 2014, Co-Chair of the 1st Euro-Asian Melanoma  and Skin Cancers Congress and Co-Chair of its Organising Committee  held in Sarajevo. In addition to lectures  held, organisation of the Congress and bringing of the world leading figures to BiH, gave a significant contribution to the medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina in general, as well as to Sarajevo and BiH, where such eminent gathering took place.
  • December 2014- promoted to an academic title of Associate Professor at the  Medical School in Sarajevo, teaching subject of SURGERY, in the field of  PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY.
  • December 2014,  a book titled Basics of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery was presented, published by the Sarajevo University Medical School. With Professor Reuf Karabeg, as its author and editor,  the book was written by 22 most prominent experts from Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, BiH and USA. It is the one out of two  textbooks for students of medicine and dental medicine, as well as a manual for registrars of related fields of specialisation  published in the region of the former Yugoslavia.
  • September 2015  Dubrovnik, Croatia, as the Vice-president of the Congress and member of the Organising Committee of the 2nd Fellows of Science Congress and the 10th  Anniversary of Croatian Congress of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in Dubrovnik,  presented 2 papers (one in the field of aesthetic surgery and the other in the field of surgery of tumour-melanoma) as an invited lecturer
  • 2009-2016, mentor of 2 defended master's theses
  • Chair of Examining Board for Specialty Certificate Examination for 13 specialists in BiH
  • January 2017. became a member of ASPS
  • 2016 got employed at the Karabeg Surgical Clinic;Sarajevo.
  • Published in referenced journals and/or presented at congresses over 65 papers all over the world 

Note

  • Prof. Karabeg has been working as a physician of the A-National Football Team of Bosnia and Herzegovina since March 2010, as well as of the Sarajevo Football Club since 1997, performing this function for 20 years now, working as the Medical Team Coordinator for 18 years to date.
