Desmond Fernandes



Dr. Desmond Fernandes is a plastic surgeon (www.drdes.co.za) in private practice in Cape Town, South Africa at the Renaissance Body Science Institute and operates in the Renaissance Surgical Clinic (www.rensurg.co.za) .   He is also an honorary consultant at the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Groote Schuur Hospital at the University of Cape Town, South Africa

Dr Des Fernandes is the Scientific Director of ENVIRON® SKINCARE (Pty) Ltd (www.environskincare.com) and the manufacturer of skin needling devices, VIVIDA SA C.C.

Des Fernandes was born in Johannesburg, South Africa 1942 and graduated in 1966 and in 1973 he obtained the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Has worked with Prof. Christiaan Barnard in the world-famous heart transplant unit in Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, and was responsible for the illustrations of the “Piggy-back” or “Double Heart transplant.

In 1975 he started training in Plastic Surgery and worked with Dr. David Davies, a renowned Cosmetic Surgeon who pioneered the early simultaneous repair of Cleft Lip and Palate.   He joined Dr. Davies in private practice and succeeded him as the Director of the Cleft Lip and Palate Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town in 1979 and remained the Consultant-in-Charge for 21 years

By 1987 Dr Fernandes had started to produce cosmeceutic creams specifically for his patients and in 1988 he started research work with retinyl palmitate. The success of these creams led to a demand for them by people other than his patients and he was persuaded to make them available to the general public through Environ® Skin Care (Pty) Ltd.

He has published in all the major international plastic surgery journals.  The topics have ranged from cleft lip and palate, to skin care and skin needling

He has contributed chapters to six textbooks, most recently a chapter in the prestigious book “Dissecting the Face-lift where he described his “scarless” closed facelift technique using  suture suspension loops.  He has written a text book on skin care translated into Japanese, now in its third edition, and in collaboration with Dr Ernst Eislelen, he has published “The science of Vitamin A skin care” and another book “Your Skin Factory” with Jennie Munro for the general public to understand the simplified science behind skin careIn addition, he has authored two book in collaboration with Matthias Aust and Svenja Baht on skin needling: “Illustrated guide to Percutaneous Collagen Induction” as well as a book for the general public to understand:  “Why you need  skin needling”.

He has made over 120 scientific presentations at international Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic surgery or dermatology congresses and has been an invited faculty member at many conferences.

Over 100 lay press articles have been published around the world on Dr. Fernandes and Environ® creams/ or skin needling in addition to radio or TV interviews.

He remains committed to producing the safest, most effective skin care products in the world and exploring the most effective, safe methods of surgical rejuvenation.
